Go on an off night and sit near the kitchen. If Manolo is there, which he usually is, ask him to cook for you and there will unique flavors and delicious bites streaming from the kitchen for hours.
I didn't want the carne asada quesadilla to be the single best Mexican food item I've had in NY, but it probably is. Outstanding

The breakfast move is their amazing omelette, the sausage with lentils, and and the home fried potatoes with fried eggs and bacon. Charcuterie is good but not essential
Beef french dip double-dipped with extra jus on the side. Eat it with spicy mustard. Hear the lamb is worth trying also (maybe with blue cheese)
BBQ is alright here (go to Lexington Barbecue for that), but what you really want is the monstrous banana split
Open to the public 8am-1pm on Fridays. Expect long waits (>1hr), free samples, and outstanding smoked fish. Prices range from $10/lb (tuna or bluefish) – $25/lb (sable). Smoked salmon is $16 - 22/lb
