Matt: Rossio Square – this is THE downtown. There are a lot of markets and events going on there. If you’re lucky, you might get to see one! It is also a good place to start for exploring the surrounding streets.
Matt: A Ginjinha – cool little bar (?) to get a shot of the local cherry liquor. It will take 5 minutes and isn’t far from Rossio Square. GO. Kitty: you know how I feel about cherry flavored things. This goes on the approved list of cherry things.
Matt: Cervejaria Trindade – oldest brewery in Portugal and it used to be a convent. The inside is BEAUTIFUL! I would recommend going for a beer so that you can explore the inside and talk to the bartenders about the history. There isn’t a tour but the art and architecture inside is worth it. Plus it is about 10 minutes from the Square.
Matt: Belem Tower – waterfront tower. Read about the history. Worth seeing! It is part of a street on the Belem waterfront with many statues/monuments
Matt: Monument to the Discoveries – enormous monument honoring everyone who contributed to the Age of Discovery. Be sure to notice the world map on the ground near this.
Matt: Aguas Livres Aqueduct – I think this is sort of a symbol of Lisbon now. It is really just a long aqueduct but the history of it is impressive.
Matt: National Museum of Ancient Art – you might be able to get in for free if you go at the right time. Lots of great art. Good if you want a museum. Not life changing if not.
Matt: Monastery of Jeronimos -- great gardens in front of a monastery. Very pretty inside. I’d recommend it but it isn’t a must.
Matt: There’s some castle that people seem to like too but I didn’t go.
